Lincoln Valley Scottish Rite
Feast of Tishri
The origins and significances of the Feast of Tishri make it the most Scottish Rite of festivals. Although originally celebrated as a harvest and gathering festival, no other occasion epitomizes the character and purpose of the Rite more wholly than our historic celebration, held in conjunction with the dedication of King Solomon's Temple (2 Chronicles 7:8-10). To marshal the meanings of the feast is to summarize the principal ideals and traditions of our Fraternity. We observe the Feast of Tishri because it is an age-old custom which now has the power of law. Under the Statutes of the Supreme Council, the feast was considered an obligatory observance, a sharing of our fraternal spirit. Freemasons have always revered order since we recognize that there is a Supreme Order that structures all creation. Masonic Law emulates this divine order, and we serve the purposes of the Great Architect of the Universe when we meet in the bonds of brotherhood, intent on making contributions to humanity. The Feast of Tishri promises to all men that the burdens of tyranny are temporary, that the darkness will yield to light, that knowledge will conquer ignorance, and that the Creator intended men to be free. The message of Tishri comes to us strongly and clearly from across the ages because it has been so preserved in the symbolism and allegory of the Scottish Rite. Through our observance of this great feast of thanksgiving, we, as heir of Solomon, perpetuate his magnificent Temple of freedom in our lives, our communities, our country and, most of all, in our beloved Rite. Please Join Us For This Important Scottish Rite Celebration Friday, October 20, 2006 Menu Price: $14.00 per person For reservations please call or email the Scottish Rite Office by Thursday noon, October 19, 2006. Venerable Masters Message
GREETINGS To All!
I would like to thank the members of the Lincoln Valley Scottish Rite,
who elected me as the 2006 Venerable Master of the Lodge of Perfection.
The 2006 Scottish Rite year will be definitely very busy indeed.
Many of the goals that have been set forth for the ensuing year are high,
but if one does not set goals above the average, mediocrity is the end
result.
The theme for this year will be “2006 - Renewing, Revitalizing, and
Reenergizing” and an overall program has been created to address each of
these points. With this in mind, 2006 will be a year of “Renewal” as we
focus on membership and membership retention, for membership is the key to
the other “R’s” and provides for the legacy and heritage of the Lincoln
Valley Scottish Rite to continue into the future.
At the same time we will be “Revitalizing” our Valley, with a
number of programs and activities, to gain the attention and interest of the
membership so as to be “Re-energized” for growth in future years. All this
will require time and energy, of which I am planning to devote almost all of
it to the coming year and challenge the membership to rededicate themselves
to Scottish Rite Masonry as a whole and this valley in particular to work
with me to make the 2006 Lincoln Valley Scottish Rite year a truly and
unequivocally successful year.

Extinguishing and Relighting of the Lights You are Cordially Invited to attend the Extinguishing and Relighting of the lights. It is a one day ceremony combining Maundy Thursday and Easter Sunday Services to be held on Saturday, April 15th, 2006. It will begin at 5:00 P.M. with the Extinguishing of the Lights Ceremony. The dinner will be served at 6:00 P.M. The Relighting of the Lights Ceremony will begin at 7:00 P.M. and conclude by 8:00 P.M. Reservations are required. The ceremony is open to Members, Families and Guests. (This has yet to be confirmed.) When winter recedes and new brighter days appear, we celebrate Maundy Thursday, the ending of the dark days and the beginning of brighter days of spring. At the equinox long ago, the first exodus occurred as God led the Israelites from slavery in Egypt to freedom in the promised land. Some nineteen hundred years later, at the time of the feast of the passover, the mandate of Maundy Thursday was born as the Master was returning for the last time to Jerusalem. The next day he was crucified. Maundy Thursday and the extinguishing of the lights are significant not only in the despair of the event, but also in the recognition of the inevitability that they will be relit. Through God's will, it is man's destiny to refute the darkness and barrenness and to bring forth those virtues that are emblematic of the relighting of the lights on Easter morning. Our Masonic traditions provide the blueprint, which, if followed, will replace darkness with the brightness of true brotherhood. Let us, therefore, join the annual celebration of Extinguishing and Relighting the Lights Ceremony with this fixed purpose. The Scottish Rite Spring Reunion 2006 On Saturday, March 25th, 2006, The Scottish Rite, Lincoln Valley, will hold their Annual Scottish Rite Reunion this year at the Scottish Rite Temple in Lincoln. Further Information to Follow.
FEAST OF TISHRI The Feast of Tishri is scheduled for Friday, October 20th, 2006. Further information to follow. THE VACANT CHAIR CEREMONY 2006 On Saturday, November 11th, 2006, @ 7:00 p.m. , The Vacant Chair Ceremony will be put on at the Scottish Rite by Lincoln Area Blue Lodges to honor members of our Armed Forces living or dead who have served our country in all of our wars. A Veterans Day Meal will be served at 6:00 p.m. at a cost of $10.00 per person. Plan on attending this moving ceremony.
The Scottish Rite of Freemasonry is one of two branches of masonry in which a Master Mason may proceed after he has completed the three degrees of Symbolic Masonry or Blue Lodge, the other being York Rite. The cause of human progress is our cause, the enfranchisement of human thought our supreme wish, the freedom of human conscience our mission, and the guarantee of equal rights to all people everywhere, our ultimate goal . Scottish Rite is an elaboration of the basic masonic principles found in Blue Lodge and provides a better understanding of the meaning of Freemasonry through the use of drama and appeal to the eye as well as the ear. There are four coordinate bodys in Scottish Rite in the Southern Jurisdiction. They are: Lodge of Perfection 4th thru the 14th degree, Chapter of Rose Croix 15th degree thru the 18th degree, Council of Kadosh 19 degree thru the 30th degree, and Consistory 31th thru the 32nd degree. The explanations of the Lodges given on their separate pages were made after the study of "Clausen's Commentaries". Every Scottish Rite Mason should seek further light by studying further. The earliest records trace Scottish Rite to Bordeaux, France, about the middle of the 18th century, where the word "Ecossais" meaning Scottish was found. From there it went to the West Indies and then to the United States. The first Supreme Council was established in Charleston, South Carolina. All other Supreme Councils are descended from it. Supreme Council in Scotland did not come into existence until 1846. Like the Symbolic Craft, Scottish Rite does not intrude upon the church or attempt to teach any creed. Scottish Rite is not a religion. The Rite does require a personal faith in one God and encourages the brother to attend his own church. The Fraternity is a meeting place for all races and creeds. To discuss or inject ones own religious beliefs can only create argument. Questions and Answers What is the Scottish Rite? The Scottish Rite confers the 4th through 32nd Degrees in sessions called "reunions". The Degree work is often conferred at one time, usually a two day event. Reunions are generally held twice each year. The Rite is "Scottish" in only a distant sense. Some say that Scotland was viewed in 18th century France as far away, almost mythical place. Those wishing to add an "exotic" aura to Freemasonry adopted Escosais (Scottish) to describe their new degree. Where Did Scottish Rite Masonry Begin? The Scottish Rite Degrees were formalized as part of what was called the Rite of Perfection under the Constitutions of 1761 and 1762. They were conveyed by merchant Brethern from Bordeaux, France through the West Indies to cities in the American mainland, including Charleston, South Carolina in 1783. A group of 11 Brethern in Charleston, South Carolina formed the "Supreme Council of the 33 degree of the United States" on May 31, 1801. Throughout the world, all other regular and recognized Supreme Councils of the Scottish Rite of Freemasonry are branches of this original root. What Does the Scottish Rite Teach? There is great emphasis on "light" in Masonry. As a means of advancing Symbolic Freemasonry, the Scottish Rite seeks to add to Masonrys Light as acquired by every Master Mason. Through the fourth to thirty-second degrees, more light is added in the sense that new insights are offered into Freemasonrys essential principles. They are not truly "higher" or "advanced" degrees other than their numbering. Rather, they reach into Symbolic Lodge teachings to clarify and inspire. The Scottish Rites contemporary presence reaches far back into the past and draws its strength from origins and insights of ancient times. The voices of Biblical and pre-Biblical sages echo throughout our ceremonies, and New and Old Testament insights elevate our teachings. The new law of love mandated by Jesus of Nazareth is as central to our philosophy as the laws of Moses, the wisdom of King Solomon and the teachings of Plato, Pythagoras and Socrates. From the rich blending of the best man has ever thought comes Scottish Rite Freemasonrys premier teaching - tolerance. Ours is a brotherhood without boundaries, faith without sect, patriotism without party. It is a universal unity of hearts, a bonding of good men becoming better through service to their Creator and to all mankind. What is the Mission of the Scottish Rite? To seek that which is of most worth in the world; To exalt the dignity of every person; To maximize our service to humanity;
How is the Scottish Rite Organized? The Scottish Rite is organized into "Orients" (states) and "Valleys" (cities or regions). There are five Valleys in the Orient of Nebraska: Lincoln, Omaha, Hastings, Alliance, and Norfolk. At the national level, all Valleys come under the auspices of the Supreme Council of the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite, Southern Jurisdiction, located in Washington D.C. The central headquarters are located in the magnificent House of the Temple. (The northern tier of 15 states comprises the Northern Masonic Jurisdiction.) Who Can Qualify to Join? To be eligible for the Scottish Rite, the individual must be a Master Mason in good standing in his Blue Lodge, and be recommended by two Scottish Rite Masons in good standing. As with Blue Lodge Masonry, the applicant for Scottish Rite Masonry must be judged to be of good moral character, and his election must be unanimous. How Do I Join? You may ask a Scottish Rite Mason for a petition for membership, or you may be asked by a member of the Rite to join. If you do not know a Scottish Rite Mason, or do not know if a Mason is a member of the Rite, contact your local Valley office. In Lincoln, the Valley office is located in the Temple at 332 Centennial Mall South, and the phone number is (402) 435-2144. What Does it Cost? The cost may vary from Valley to Valley. Currently, the one time initiation fee for the 29 Scottish Rite degrees in the Lincoln Valley is $180.00 if the applicant is over 30 years of age or $125.00 if he is 30 or under. This initiation fee includes the Scottish Rite cap, the 14 degree ring, prorated dues for the first year and the Scottish Rite Journal which is published monthly. The annual dues in the Lincoln Valley after the first year are $37.50. What Civic Philanthropies Does the Scottish Rite Support? Our words live in the real world because of our active involvement in local, state, national and international programs, where we:
Foremost among these is the Scottish Rite Child Language and Learning Disorders Program Clearly, the Rite is Right for You and for the times! THIS FROM NOBLE REED FANNING OF SHRINERS 2000
Brothers, I am not sure this word has gotten out to everyone... A MEMORIAL Brother Carl T. Curtis was born on March 15th, 1905, on a farm in Nebraska. He was raised to the sublime degree of a Master Mason in Minden Lodge and was coroneted a 33rd Degree Mason in Hastings Scottish Rite. He entered the United States Congress on January 3rd, 1939, and voluntarily retired on January 3rd, 1979. For the first 16 years he served in the House of Representives, and the last 24 years in the United States Senate. It is said that one of his first books he wrote while in Congress was "40 Years Against the Tide". Brother Carl was a man of his convictions, and would stand toe to toe if he thought he was right. It was Senator Curtis , while he was in office, to devise and follow through with the adoption of a plan for people to have retirement benefits called IRA'S. Brother Carl was also a very religious person and on April 7th, 1935, he was ordained as Elder in the First Presbyterian Church in Minden, Nebraska. At the time of his retirement from office he was Chairman of the Prayer Breakfast Group of the United States Senate. At this time, in 1976 and 1977, Senator Curtis wrote a collection of devotions a day at a time. He usually arose early in the morning and spent an hour writing a devotion for that day. This editor was one of the receipents of his book called "TO REMIND". One Thursday afternoon, on February 6th 1996, Brother Carl, visited our Luncheon, and made a presentation of the book to every Mason present, which speaks volumes as to the heart of Brother Carl. This is what Dr. Richard Halverson, Former Chaplin, United States Senate, wrote: As I read the words, I was thrilled not only with what was written, but the fact that this one writing represented his strength and integrity of public service. Most Worshipful Brother Duke Lichty, Sovereign Grand Inspector General, Lincoln Valley, Orient of Nebraska "Freemasons: Who are we, What are we, and Where are we headed?" Since the vote of the Imperial Council of the Shrine of North America on July 5th,2000, removing the requirement that a Mason must be a member of either the Scottish or York Rite of Freemasonry in order to be eligible to petition the Shrine, the foregoing questions have been asked of me over and over again. I have discussed this with leaders of the Symbolic Masonry, the York Rite, the Scottish Rite and the Shrine. The answer is unique to Nebraska Freemasons. It depends on who we are, what we are, and where we came from. Remember, Shriners are still Masons. In Nebraska, we have all cooperated closely. Lodge Officers usually wear the scimitar and crescent on their lapel, and active members of the Scottish Rite and York Rite often are among the leading petition signers for the Shrine. To paraphrase Pogo, "We have met our friends, and they are us." We do not forget that Shrine Masons are still a part of Freemasonry! From all across the great State of Nebraska, Shrine leaders have told me that they are still Masons, still Scottish Rite Masons, still York Rite Masons, and that they will continue to encourage Masons to join the Scottish Rite and York Rite. They have assured me that they will keep their Scottish Rite and York Rite memberships, and that they will continue to work for the good of the Rites. In turn, I have assured them that I am still a Shriner, and I will continue to work for the good of the Shrine, as well for all Masonry. Who are we? We are all Masonic Brothers! What are we? We are good men who strive to become better than we are, and to make this world a better place to live for all people. Where are we headed? It is my hope that by exerting ourselves and working in the quarries for the greater good of all who need our help, we can make all of the bodies and branches of Freemasonry healthy, alive, and a force for good in our Cities, our States, and our Nation, and still have fun and fraternity. We need to find more ways to help our fellow men, to be useful and to increase knowledge in our communities. There are enough foes of Masonry out there, with their bigoted, un-Christian attitude toward us. Therefore it continues to be necessary for all branches of Freemasonry to cooperate and work together to make this world a better place for all. In the face of the enemies of Freemasonry, let us never forget the words of our Most Worshipful Brother, Benjamin Franklin to his fellow signers of the Declaration of Independence: "We must all hang together, or assuredly we shall all hang separately." In Nebraska, we are all Freemasons. We all need to cooperate. Let us never forget the lesson of the trowel and always use it to spread the cement of Brotherly love and affection among all Masons, including Shriners and members of the Rites. Yours in Brotherhood, Duke Lichty (This article was edited from the September Sesostris Shrine Festivities. Our Most Worshipful Brother is a member and has headed the bodies of the Symbolic Lodge, York Rite and Scottish Rite. He is also a member of Sesostris Shrine. (See Grand Lodge, Grand Commandery, Shrine, and Imperial Shrine pages for related messages.) ILLUSTRIOUS BROTHER WARREN DUKE LICHTY, 33RD DEGREE, S. G. I. G. Editors Note: One of the best Websites on Freemasonry that this editor has had the privilege to view has come to me by a noble through Shriners 2000. Noble Scott Eastwold from El Riad Temple in Sioux Falls, South Dakota suggested we view the Website of Unity Lodge #130. They have done an excellent job of presenting Masonry to our brethern and to people at large. You my view this website by going to : http://www.unitylodge.com The new Masonic Family Organization Mural We are privileged to have a very beautiful mural painting of the Masonic Family Organization in the basement level lounge of our Scottish Rite Temple. The mural was painted by Michael Nelson and installed by Mural Mural Grafics. Pictured on the Mural is depicted a stairway and arch on which is deliniated all of the degrees and organizations of Masonry. On each side of the Arch starting on the left hand side is a picture of the House of the Temple in Washington D.C. In the center is the Temple of King Solomon, and to the right is our own beautiful Scottish Rite Temple. This Mural was inspired by a "Life" magazine picture and article published on October 8th, 1956. The funds for the painting were donated to the Temple, and the Lodge of Perfection ordered the painting produced for the enjoyment of the brethren. It is a very valuable and lasting addition to our lounge and will be admired for many years to come.
The Scottish Rite Childhood Language Disorders Clinics, Centers, and Programs is the Philanthropy of the Scottish Rite. In the early 1950's, in Colorado, Scottish Rite of the Southern Jurisdiction started a program to help children with speech an language disorders. This led to Scottish Rite Clinics to provide evaluation and treatment of speech, language disorders, and learning disabilities. There are 135 Scottish Rite Centers and Clinics throughout the United States. In Nebraska we have five and they are: Scottish Rite Temple in Alliance, Nebraska, 123 West 3rd Street 69301, (402)-762-4703), University of Nebraska, 253 Barkley Memorial Center, Lincoln, Nebraska 68583 (402-472-2071), Munroe Meyer Institute, University of Nebraska Medical Center, Omaha, Nebraska 68198 (402-559-6460), Masonic Temple, Norfolk, Nebraska, 904 Norfolk Ave. 68701(402-463-1518), and Hastings Masonic Temple, Hastings, Nebraska (402-463-1518). - Children who have these problems are sometimes hard to detect. Early treatment is important. They may be slow in developing a vocabulary and difficult to understand, using incomplete or incorrect sentences or gibberish. They may have difficulties with attention, memory, or word retrieval and slow in auditory information. Parents must remember that many of these dysfunctions do not mean mental deficiency or emotional disturbance. Scottish Rite Clinics accept children as well as some adults who have these disorders. Call your local director of those Scottish Rite Centers who are listed above for further information.

Fame, fortune and success may record a person's name in the pages of history but it is the little acts of daily kindness and human compassion that engraves one's name in the lives that he has touched. Robert A. Metcalf was such a person. Born in Lincoln, Nebraska, he attended Lincoln High School graduating in June, 1941. After graduation he entered the Army in August, 1942, and was assigned to the 806th Tank Destroyer Medical Detachment. He saw duty in the South Pacific. On February, 1946, He was honorably discharged. Resuming civilian life, he enrolled at Nebraska Wesleyan University fall 1946 He received his Bachelors of Arts Degree in June, 1950. The following December, he enrolled in California College of Mortuary Science and after graduation he returned to Lincoln and on August 1st, 1961, founded the Metcalf Funeral Home. On October 7th, 1943, Bob married Dorothy I. Martin. They have two children, a son Ross, and his wife Joni, and Janice and husband Mick Mickle. On April 7th, 1958, Bob received his Entered Apprentice Degree, passed to the degree of a Fellowcraft Mason on May 12th, 1958, and was raised to the sublime degree of a Master Mason on June 16th, 1958. All degrees were received in East Lincoln Lodge #210. Bob served as Worshipful Master in 1969. He was also a member of Lincoln Chapter #148 Order of Eastern Star, serving his chapter as Worthy Patron in 1960. In 1970-71 he served in Grand Chapter of Nebraska as Worthy Grand Patron. In 1959, Bob joined the Scottish Rite Lincoln Valley. He was coroneted a Knight Commander Court of Honor (KCCH) on October 20th, 1975. On December 12th, 1981, he was invested with the 33rd Degree Honorary. In 1984 - 1985 Most Worshipful Sir Robert A. Metcalf served the Grand Lodge of Nebraska as the 119th Grand Master. He also served as Potentate of Sesostris Shrine Center in 1996. We are honoring the memory of Robert A. Metcalf who died on November 20th, 2002. He was a devoted husband and father, an honest and upright man with boundless energy for doing good works. He was a man blessed with a sense of humor and a cheerful zest for life. A sincere, helpful, and generous friend who will be missed by all. (From the Double Eagle Newsletter published by Rose Croix.) From the Masters Corner Twenty-two years of teaching music has made me realize how important it is to work together. Whether preparing for a vocal program or a band program, the same necessary ingredients of teamwork were important if we were to work in harmony. So it is with Scottish Rite. We would all like to think that we could go it alone, but the smart man realizes that it takes all members working together to provide a harmonious situation. It goes even further than that. It takes the older members to enlighten us with their wisdom and knowledge and it takes the younger members to give us the courage to make a progressive change. Whichever group you belong to, we need all of our members to move forward in harmony and work together for the good of the organization. With this in mind, I hope to see all of you at the next business meeting. Michael A. Buchardt Venerable Master (from the Double Eagle Newsletter)

Dallas Gibson, 33rd Degree The Lincoln Valley is pleased to name its fall 2001 Reunion class in honor of J. Dallas Gibson, 33rd Degree, a good man and a gentle mason. Dallas was a twin, he and his sister Agnes being born in Elizabeth, Pennsylvania. His father, a United Presbyterian minister, later moved the family to Greenville, Pennsylvania. It was there that Dallas graduated from Greenville High School where he was captain of the football team. Graduating from Penn State University in 1936, Dallas entered the Pittsburgh Xenia Theological Seminary from which he graduated in 1939. The Presbyterian church in Ewing, Nebraska was the site of Dallas' first ministry. While in Ewing, he also served as Secretary of the School Board, the Red Cross Emergency Team and delivered mail on the 80 mile Star Route three times weekly. He served other Presbyterian congregations in Tarkio, Missouri and Garner Iowa before coming to Lincoln to serve the congregation known as Heritage Presbyterian Church for over 25 years. After his "retirement" from congregational ministry in 1978, he continued to serve as supply pastor to congregations in Southeast Nebraska. He was designated as Pastor Emeritus of Heritage Presbyterian Church in 1978 by the Homestead Presbytery. He also worked in many offices of the Presbytery and worked on the Board of Directors of many Seminaries. Dallas met Anna Mary Hoffman on a blind date arranged by a seminary classmate and her nursing school classmate. They went dancing and after a four year courtship, they were married by Dallas' father on January 14th, 1940. The couple had two sons, John and Richard. Active in various community organizations, Dallas belonged to Rotary International, Kawanis, The Community Chest, and Boy Scouts of America. He also loved to fish and hunt. His Masonic career was lengthy. He received the degrees of Ancient Craft Masonry in Lancaster Lodge #54 in 1962, served the Lodge as Master in 1986. In 1963, Dallas received the Scottish Rite Degrees in the Lincoln Valley. He was Venerable Master in the Lodge of Perfection in 1975. He also served the Grand Lodge of Nebraska as Chaplain for 9 years and Historian for one year. His service to the community and the Scottish Rite was recognized in 1973 when he was invested with the Knight Commander Court of Honor (KCCH), followed by his elevation to the 33 degree Honorary in 1979. He was also a member of the York Rite, Sesostris Shrine, and Temple Chapter #271, Order of Eastern Star. W.B. Dallas departed this earthly life January 19th, 2001, to carry on his service in both the celestial lodge and church in the heaven above. "Well Done Good and Faithful Servant. Enter Thou into the Joy of thy Lord." From the Double Eagle, Valley of Lincoln - Orient of Nebraska Brother Dave Thomas, 33rd degree, inspired many about the plight of children without parents. He formed the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption. This is an article writen by the Chicage Tribune about our Illustrious Brother.
Entrepreneurs lost a self-made impresario whose business was a role model others envied. His company lost a pitchman supreme who was shrewd enough to name his restaurants after his 8-year-old daughter -- and to have her on hand in a blue-and-white-striped dress to greet his very first customers in Columbus, Ohio, in 1969. But there is one relatively small community of Americans whom Thomas helped as no one else ever has. He was the patron saint of adoption, a world of complex emotions, elaborate legal strictures and, until Thomas came along, obscurity that often made it seem suspicious. Dave Thomas did more to change that impression than a nation of adoption advocates together. He urged Americans to view adoption not as something for people to feel squeamish about or to fear, but rather as an essentially simple social contract to help children in need. Thomas' obituaries last week caught a part of his relationship with adoption, but not the whole story. The familiar part of the story is that Thomas was born in 1932, in New Jersey, to a woman who chose to place him for adoption. He was raised from infancy by a Michigan couple. When he was 5, his adoptive mother died of rheumatic fever; his adoptive father remarried three times and moved frequently. Less known is the way that transient lifestyle both seared Thomas and left him extraordinarily grateful. "Dave never forgot what it felt like to be alone," says Denny Lynch, president of the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption. "Moving from city to city to city, he was always the new kid at school, always the outsider ... He knew what it was like to be overlooked, what it was like to be last in line." But Thomas also knew he had a home, however shiftless and imperfect. As an adult, he took an interest in foster children who didn't have what he had had. "He used to say he could have been one of those children," says Lynch, who traveled on business with Thomas for 22 years. "He could have been bounced from home to home to home. No one speaks for those children. Nothing pained Dave more than sitting down with a child who was being bounced around because nobody wanted to care for him." One night in the late 1980s, Thomas mentioned to a group of Wendy's managers in Kentucky that he'd been adopted. His point wasn't to tout adoption, but to say that if he could start with nothing and succeed, so could they. Afterward, one manager approached Thomas to say that he too had been adopted, but had always felt uneasy about that. "You can help people like me by talking more about adoption," the man said. Thomas' response: "OK, I will." That conversation started Thomas' crusade. His emphasis was on helping older or minority or special needs kids, clusters of siblings included, who needed help to escape from the foster care system. He lobbied nationwide for tax credits and legislation to make adoption easier and more affordable. Most important, he beamed a spotlight on an often misunderstood social contract. Adoption, like biological parenthood, isn't without its flaws and failures. It forces prospective parents to ask if they can love a child to whom they're not related by blood -- a child whose genes are not theirs, but whose challenges would be. Dave Thomas died without knowing how many adoptive parents he inspired, or how many foster children he helped. The new families he helped build will outlive him, each one a quiet testament to his cause.
