IMPERIAL SHRINE OF NORTH AMERICA 2007 - 2008 IMPERIAL DIVAN
The Shrine of North America is nearly 550,000 nobles belonging to 191 Temples, or Chapters throughout North America. "Men of faith believe that at times, in the course of human history, the Divine Creator, whom we call GOD, has planted a great ideal in the mind of particular man or has stirred the soul of a certain individual with divine fire. In this way, great movements of good have come into existence which have changed the lives of countless numbers of mankind". Genesis The Shrine was founded in 1872 by a group of men belonging to the Masonic Order. Dr. Walter M. Fleming, a Doctor and Surgeon, and William Florence, an Actor, basically started the Shrine. These two men met at a Masonic Luncheon Club in New York and William Florence came up with the Order name and ritual. The first draft of the ritual was finished in 1870. It was Dr. Fleming who took charge with his bulldog tenacity and attention to detail to push through to his goals of establishing the Mystic Shrine of North America. The Shrine's headress, The Fez, made in Fez, Morocco, has been handed down from ancient times. Charles McClenachan, William Patterson and Albert Rawson were credited with perfecting the ritual. They also held that Nobles must be Scottish Rite or York Rite Masons. The work was communicated to himself, and 12 other members of the Masonic Luncheon Club by Doctor Fleming. With these 12 members and 17others the first temple was formed and called Mecca Temple in September 1872, in New York. The second Temple, Damascus, was formed in Rochester, N.Y. in June, 1876. As the temples were increasing in size, Noble Fleming called for the formation of a parent body. Thus the creation of the Imperial Grand Council of the Ancient Arabic Order of Nobles of the Mystic Shrine was formed. The Grand Line officers were elected for three years: Walter F. Fleming, Grand Potentate, N.Y. City, George F. Loder, Deputy Grand Potentate, Rochester, N.Y., Phillip F. Lenhart, Grand Chief Rabban, Brooklyn, N.Y., Edward M.L.Ehlers, Grand Asst. Chief Rabban, N.Y., City, William H. Whiting, Grand High Priest & Prophet, Rochester, N.Y., Samuel R. Carter, Grand Oriental Guide, Rochester, Aaron L. Northrup, Grand Treasurer, N.Y., City, William S. Patterson, Grand Recorder, N.Y., City. Albert P. Moriarity, Grand Financial Secretary, N.Y., City, John L. Stettinius, Grand First Ceremonial Master, Cincinnati, Ohio, Bensen Sherwood, Grand Second Ceremonial Master, N.Y., City, Samuel Harper, Grand Marshall, Pittsburgh, Penn., Frank Bascom, Grand Captain of the Guard, Montpelier, Vermont, George Scott, Grand Outer Guard, Patterson, N.J. The first official act was to grant a charter to Mecca Temple on September 26th, 1872. In 1886, at the Imperial Grand Council at Al Koran temple, the word Grand was dropped from the Officers and Council and Dr. Fleming announced his retirement. The Shrine continued to increase membership down through the First World War Years, In 1921, we entered the program of Shriners Hospitals for Children. The depression years caused the Shrine temples to give more thought to supplementing our assesment to keep our Hospitals open. The fifty-eighth Imperial Council Session in 1932, at San Francisco, Calif. was "dedicated to the spirit of optimism that lives in the heart of all Americans".The Shriners did a magnificent job to bring our Hospitals through these trying times. In 1953, our dues assesment was raised to $5.00 and income for the Hospitals are increased from endowments, and proceeds from various games and other activities. The story of the Shrine is that of hundreds of thousands of men, Freemasons all, who join together to mix fellowship, pleasure, entertainment, good will, and vast charity in a grand scale program of fraternal good works that truly earns for them the title "NOBLE". THE SHRINERS CREED Shriners believe in GOD and that HE created man to serve HIS purposes, among which is service to others in HIS name. We believe that care for the less fortunate, especially children who suffer from burns and crippling diseases, is our institutional calling. We are patriots, each willing to serve his country with fidelity and courage. We cherish independence, under law and freedom, with responsibility. We honor family. We respect our parents, wives, and children. We should instill in our children the tenets of this creed and the heritage from which it emanates. As individuals, we pledge ourselves to intregrity, virtue, and nobility of character. Our intentions will be honorable, our relations will be trustworthy, and our spirits forgiving of each other. As brothers, we offer each other fraternal affection and respect. Together we will support each other in adherence to this creed so that we and our communities will be the better because of our fraternity and its principles. As Shriners, we look beyond ourselves to serve the needs of others, especially children who cannot help themselves. We believe Shriners Hospitals to be the "World's Greatest Philanthropy", and we covenant with each other to support its "Temples of Mercy" with spirit, time, talent, and means. IMPERIAL SHRINE COMMUNICATIONS FROM DR. BERNARD J. LEMIEUX, IMPERIAL POTENTATE ON OCTOBER 24TH, 2007 Dear Fellow Nobles: FROM DR. BERNARD J. LEMIEUX, IMPERIAL POTENTATE ON AUGUST 18TH, 2007 My fellow nobles:
Noble Errol Sturt passed away at his home in Florida this
morning. No arrangements are known as yet. (Sent by Noble Dale Lucia of YAARAB Shrine, Atlanta, Georgia) [Shriners - 2000]
THE GEORGE WASHINGTON INAUGURAL BIBLE SHRINERS HOSPITALS FOR CHILDREN W. Freeland Kendrick, Imperial Potentate Elect, in 1919, launched the Idea that the Order of the Nobles of the Mystic Shrine in North America, should do something for friendless, orphaned, and crippled children. Thus, Noble Kendrick came to be known as "Father" of the Shrine's great Philanthropy. A resolution was introduced at the 45th Annual Session of the Imperial Council, in 1919, at Indianapolis, Indiana, by Noble Philip D. Gorden of Montreal, Canada, that it would be fitting that some lasting memorial be established to show the world that we as a body of loyal and patriotic citizens of North America, from which thousands of our membership have enlisted, and scores have paid the supreme sacrifice in the cause of justice, liberty, and democracy, for all of which our beloved Order has stood so prominently, And as W. Freeland Kendrick has made his wishes known to this Imperial Council, Be it resolved, that this Imperial Council place itself on record favoring such a proposition and be called "The Mystic Shriners' Peace Memorial for Friendless, Orphaned, and Crippled Children, and a committee be appointed for purchasing a sutable site for this purpose and making other further arrangements, and that a special assessment of $1.00 be made on each member of the order in addition of the annual dues and remitted to the Imperial Recorder. In 1920, Imperial Potentate Kendrick presented a formal resolution to the 46th Council but raised the assessment to $2.00. He also recommended a committee of seven be established to secure plans for the Hospital. And that additional assesments be levied as required for the support of the institution. It was also decided that the hospital would be open to all children regardless of race, color, or creed whose parents were unable to pay for the needed surgical, medical, and hospital facilities. In the 1921 Imperial Council Session, a resolution was approved to established a chain of hospitals, and voted to set up a board of Trustees with full rights and privileges to apply for incorporation in any state deemed necessary and to select sites to erect and maintain hospitals and provide for skilled staffs for each. The Shrine has accomplished this on such a high plane that millions of dollars have been donated by people who were not Shriners at all. To manage one hospital is a highly technical job, but the Shriners have brought in existence 22 hospitalsl to date. Since establishment, the Shriners have treated over one-half million boys and girls who were otherwise were doomed to a life of disappointment, pain, and isolation and restored them to health & well being. Happiness has been brought to many parents who would otherwise wittness daily suffering and affliction of their little ones. In its great PhIlanthropy, the Shrine not only found its soul, but discovered that the soul is the spirit of the Shrine. (Edited from the 1888 to 1988 Centenial History Book of Sesostris Temple in Lincoln, Nebraska). MISSION STATEMENT OF ALL SHRINERS HOSPITALS FOR CHILDREN It is the mission of all Shriners Hospitals to provide the highest quality care to children with neuromusculoskeletal conditions, burn injuries and certain other special health care needs within a compassionate, family centered and collaborative care environment. To provide for the education of physicians and other health care professionals, and to conduct research to discover new knowledge that improves the quality of care and quality of life of children and families. This mission is carried out without cost to the patient or family, and without regard to race, color, creed, sex,or sect.
Throughout the United States and the world, communities large and small are holding memorial services to honor the thousands of innocent victims of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, as well as those whose lives were lost in heroic life-saving efforts at the World Trade Center in New York City. Shriners everywhere also are numbered among those paying tribute to the fallen. One group of Shriners members of the Great Lakes Shrine Association (GLSA) and their families held a memorial service, which will be etched forever in the hearts of those in attendance. As one participant said after the service, "It was the most unifying experience I've ever been involved in." The memorial service was held in lieu of the usual Shriners parade in downtown Franklin Park, Ill., a northwest suburb of Chicago. The service took place at the group's headquarters hotel, the Ramada Plaza Hotel O'Hare, in Rosemont, Ill., on Saturday, Sept. 15, midway through the 3-day GLSA meeting and several days after the attack on America.

WHAT AN IMPRESSIVE CEREMONY. A big two thumbs up for the public presentation of the January 29th Shrine Ceremonial. Flags of the fifty states were each carried in by Sesostris Shriners who encircled the audience. Following the introductions of special guests and of the eight candidates, the initiation ceremony was presented by Ararat Shrine of Kansas City, Missouri. The Orator told the basic history and the virtuous tenets of Masonry. The building of the Arch began in dramatic presentation by the stone masons in full ceremonial atire. The stones were each assembled with the emblems of the Masons, Scottish Rite, York Rite, and at the top crowned with the Scimitar and Crescent. One of our Shrine patients was wheeled in by our Potentate, Ill. Sir Jerry Sievers. Few dry eyes gazed upon the pair as Ill. Sir knelt down to lift up the child, and with the little crutches in Jerry's hand, and the child cradled in his right arm, turned and walked through the Arch of Philanthropic Dedication. A Shriner then came before us with Fez in hand and recited the poem, "This old Fez of Mine". The Fezzing took place, bringing unquestionable meaning to what our New Shrine Brothers were committed. This ceremony should be presented to each future candidate! If anyone ever questions the purpose and philosophy of the Shrine, the Greatest Philanthropy in the World, they should witness what we were so privileged to see on that unforgettable afternoon. End. A VERY SERIOUS LOOK AT OUR LIFE AND TIMES BY A RESPECTED SOLDIER- MASON- SHRINER Gaylord Zeeby Thomas is a Officer in the Air Force and a Mason ShrinerRecent events sure bring a lot of things into focus for us and help us not to take things for granted so much. We Americans are so accustomed to our freedom that we have forgotten how truly important it really is. Our forefathers fought - and died - for it. They knew its value. Members of the armed forces give up many of those very same freedoms (some only temporarily) and become acutely aware of this fact the moment they step off the bus and start their basic training, or boot camp as so many people like to think of it. It is just another one of those things about human nature. we sometimes don't appreciate something until it is taken away. How lucky we are - or feel - if we can get it back.
Just as man's knowledge of the earth itself has evolved, our knowledge of "things" and even human nature has also evolved over time. What we "believe" has changed over time. and when you realize that you depend so much on "beliefs," you must realize that it is your very faith that drives your actions often times even more than a reliance on the facts.
It is as "true" on the personal/individual level as it
is on the collective societal level.Where will the next level take us this time? We have
no choice but to continue forward. Forward in time. Forward in progress. Forward to
something better as every major event in the history of the world has also done. Just as
we individually advance separately and at our own pace in thought and understanding of the
"Truth," societies also advance at separate paces. While we, Americans have much
to learn yet about "terrorism," (things many other societies have already
learned), the rest of the world has much
