 GENERAL GRAND CHAPTER COMMUNICATION

From Larry E. Gray, General Grand High Priest, on Tuesday, October 9th, 2007

Sent: Tuesday, October 09, 2007 4:15 AM
Subject: General Grand Announcement

Dear Companions,

I have announced that I will be a candidate for the office of General Grand Secretary at the next Triennial. Over the years, several Companions have asked that I consider becoming the General Grand Secretary at the end of my term as General Grand High Priest. At various times in the last two years, the General Grand King, Emory J. Ferguson, and the General Grand Scribe, Edmund D. Harrison, have discussed the possibility and both endorse my candidacy.  My Companions, there are clear signs of growth and development in the new members attracted to the Lodges. We have an obligation to draw them into the rewards of Capitular Masonry. This resurgence coupled with the growth of activity around the world will place an increasing responsibility on the Office of General Grand Secretary.

As the world changes, so must we, to accept these new and bold challenges. I believe that there is a bright future for Royal Arch Masonry and feel that it is time for The General Grand Secretary’s Office to become pro-active and be prepared to address these new demands. I respectfully solicit your vote and pledge myself with renewed vigor to help bring General Grand Chapter into the 21st century.

We have received the resignation of our current General Grand Secretary effective December 31, 2007. A replacement to fill out the term will soon be announced. Our thanks are extended to Companion John Kirby and his assistant Rebecca Warth for their many years of service.

Fraternally,

Larry E. Gray, General Grand High Priest

From the Illustrious Grand Master of Cryptic Masons of Nebraska, William G. Hurst, and Editor, Royal Arch Magazine, Nebraska Section, comes this: Companions: I'm sure you've all heard, as I have, that Masonry, and particularly, York Rite Masonry, are rapidly becoming extinct. I, for one, (perhaps I'm an optimist) chose not to believe this. I sometimes look upon such statements as wishful thinking on the part of those who have little to think about or with. At the same time, however, I also recall the story of Moses who led the children of Israel out of Egypt. You remember how he led them around in the desert for forty years before they reached the Promised Land? Many wonder why he spent forty years wandering around when they really had a short distance to go. Remember all this time he had to put up with all that whining and complaining about why they left such a good life behind for all the troubles they were going through and to go where they knew not. But, think of this, during all that time, all the whiners and complainers dropped off. A new generation was born, and by the time the goal was in sight, he had a group of people ( a lean, mean fighting machine, if you will) who knew what they wanted and were ready to take it. I suspect that Masonry is somewhat like that. We, too, have those who recall the good old days, those who complain, and those who want to go back. Ccompanions, we are also getting new, young, and excited people, and we need many more of them. If we all work together and quit worrying about how it was, and start planning  about  how it is going to be with good leadership, young and enthusiastic members, and some sound planning on how to get more of them, our future will not be nearly as bleak as our detractors would have us believe. End.

An Editorial, July 8th, 2000: As Imperial Shrine has chosen to remove the requirement of having Scottish and York Rite members be a prerequisite for joining the Shrine, it appears to me that all of us must work much harder to present to prospective members the further light and lessons taught that is gained by joining the rites. Many of us are Brothers, Companions, Sir Knights and Nobles, members of all of these bodies. We all know how dependent we are to each other, and we respect our organizations for what each teaches through masonry and the good they do for people other than ourselves through masonry and our philanthrophys. As long as we keep these objectives in mind, and work hard to keep our degrees meaningful and enlightening, this action taken will not be a hinderance. One of the most important lessons taught to us in masonry is that we should not put one organization before the other, because each serves in its own way. Brethren all, please support ALL of our organizations in a positive way by giving of your spirit, time, talent, and means.    Companion and Sir Knight   Roger W. Miner, Editor
