HISTORY OF ELECTA CHAPTER #8 ORDER OF EASTERN STAR
As in the natural order of things, one might ask what is the relevance of history in the order of masonry? One of the best reasons is that it ties all of the orders of masonry together into one complete whole. As for Electa Chapter #8, it was organized on March 4th, 1874. To place this date in Masonic history of Nebraska and Lincoln in particular with other Masonic bodies organized in this era we learn that the Grand Lodge of Nebraska was organized in 1857 and Lincoln Lodge #19, the first blue lodge in Lincoln, was organized in 1869, the State of Nebraska and the City of Lincoln was organized in 1867, Mount Moriah Commandery #4 was chartered in 1871, Lincoln Chapter #6 Royal Arch Masons was chartered in 1870, Lincoln Council #4 was chartered in 1875. Many of these masons were charter members of these lodges. One of these masons was our 3rd Governor of Nebraska, Bro. Robert W. Furnas, Electa Chapter #8's first Worthy Patron. M.W. Bro. Robert Furnas served as the 4th Grand Master of Masons of Nebraska in 1865. He also served as Worthy Grand Patron in 1877. Serving with him was Sister Mary Imhoff as our first Worthy Matron. The Imhoffs' built and operated the first grand hotel in Lincoln called the Commercial Hotel. Mary Imhoff also served as Worthy Grand Matron in 1875. Another Brother who was very prominent in Masonic circles in Lincoln and the State was Alfred G. Hastings. Alfred was also a Past Grand Master serving in 1875, also holding the high offices of the State Chapter, Council, and Commandery in York Rite. Other charter members of Electa Chapter #8 were Mrs R. Oakley, Mrs. Tom Sewell, and others, their husbands serving in other grand lines. Brother James W. Frow serving as Sentinel for Lincoln Lodge # 19, the York Rite bodies, and Electa Chapter #8 recognized him for his long and faithful service in 1908. J.E.R.Millar and his wife Janet, other members of Electa said his father helped start Masonry in Nebraska. J.E.R. Millar opened ticket office for the Atchison and Nebraska Railroad in 1875 and was a member of the Masonic Fraternity for fifty eight years. They both were members of Electa Chapter Order of Eastern Star, Kensington. He was a long time friend of James W. Frow, who was Sentinel of Mt. Moriah for many years and Secretary of Lincoln Lodge #19, who passed away in 1910. He also had much respect and esteem for Right Eminent Sir James Tyler, Past Grand Commander and Captain General for Mt. Moriah for 20 yrs. who died in office in 1919. Brother Tyler served as Worthy Patron in 1893 and his wife Emma E. Tyler served as Worthy Matron in 1896. Roll of other Patrons serving in other lines to 1900 are: J.H. Foxworthy, DeForest Green, and Lorenzo D. Woodruff. One of the most disastrous times for Electa and Masonry was when the Masonic Temple was destroyed by fire September 16th, 1899 and was comparable to starting over. The Charter was destroyed together with the paraphernalia, records, and furniture. All was left was the courage and do or die attitude of the membership. It was noted that times were hard and money scarce. It was necessary to hold meetings in a bare and uninviting room but members maintained their enthusiasm and continued to enjoy many socials. (To be continued.) Doug Anderson, Correspondent, October, November & December 2004 Issue of The Sesostris Festivities Sesostris Shrine is in the public eye through many venues, such as the Shrine athletics (football & soccer) parades, and the great work of our hospitals. But let us not forget the public performances of the Shrine Chanters. This summer has seen us sing in churches in Friend, Dorchester, and three churches in Lincoln. We also sang at the Masonic Home in Plattsmouth. We do get around! To further our public presence, we are preparing holiday music. Perhaps for your Shrine/Unit holiday party. We have several nursing homes and senior residences already lined up for the caroling season. One of the most active Shriners, Noble Bernie Dow, is retiring. A Shriner of the Year for his untiring work doing hospital visitations, onion sales, and circus ad sales. He was a real go-getter. We are all grateful for his years of dedicated services. Who will fill his shoes? Who will call on his onion customers? Who will call on his circus ad list? What a deal for any salesperson to have such a prospective list. Will that someone be you? He was also Treasurer of the Chanters It is both sad and difficult to write about the death of a dear friend. You read about Noble Dale Walters in the Masonic News and the Journal Star. We Chanters have a special tie to Dale. He was our leader! He selected our songs, taught us how to perform them and arranged for places for us to sing. Dale was a deeply religious man. We sort of became Methodists because of his selection of religious music. We thank him for his leadership and his love for us as singers, men, and Shriner-Masons. We will miss him greatly. We also thank his wife, Marion, for her steadfast love and for the support she gave him, not only as our director but also during his illness. We shall keep Marion and the family in our prayers. Enjoy the upcoming holiday season, be thankful and giving and be blessed during this Christmas and Channukah time. THANK YOU, NOBLE DOUG ANDERSON SCHEDULE OF EVENTS 2005
