Genesis

On the 7th day of January, 1875, a charter was issued by the Grand Council of Royal and Select Masters to Lincoln Council #4. The charter named as its members the following Masons of the proposed new Council of Royal and Select Masters. There was no mention of articles of Dispensation. They are:

George W. Ballantine Benjamin Crabb Boetzel Davidson Julian J. Derk
Edward A. Church Henry O. Griggs Alfred G. Hastings John P. Healt
Joseph K. Marley John McClellan Rolland H. Oakley Samuel G. Owen
Rolland O. Phelps Hiram C. Rider Walter VanAlstyne Daniel. H. Wheeler

This was not the original Charter. The original charter was destroyed probably by fire of the temple. A further study of our history has to be made to determine just what happened to the original charter. The original charter was probably signed by our 3rd Illustrious Grand Master Charles Goodman of Council #1 of Omaha who served from 1875 - 1876. It was probably  attested  by Grand Secretary William Bowen. The copy of the charter was issued by the Grand Council of Royal and Select Masters at its 45th annual communication held in Omaha, Nebraska on December 10th, 1924. It was signed by Illustrious Grand Master Harry S. Villars and attested by Francis E. White, Grand Secretary. It also states that the copy has the same force and validity as the original charter.

As a matter of history our 4th Illustrious Grand Master was Robert W. Furnas our 4th Illustrious Grand Master who served in 1877. I have read in our history that Robert W. Furnas had a difficult time keeping up the records but I also read in our proceedings that the Council of Royal and Select Masters were under the control of the Grand Chapter from 1878 - 1886. It wasn't until the year 1886 that Illustrious Grand Master Alfred G. Hastings of Council #4 our 5th Illustrious Grand Master took charge of the Grand Council and put it on track. It is also of interest that there were only two Grand Secretaries that served in this period of time, and their duties included Grand Lodge A.F.& A.M. and the bodies of York Rite. Grand Secretary William Bowen served from 1875 - 1899.  Francis E. White then served as Grand Secretary from June 9th,1899 to June 11th, 1925 shortly after the copy of our charter was signed.

The Cryptic Council

Royal Master

This is the first of the council degrees. It is conferred in the Council Chamber which represents the private apartment of King Solomon"s Temple where he and his two associates met for consultation during the construction of the temple. The Drama portrayed sheds additional light on both the Master Masons Degree and the Royal Arch Degree in Chapter. This degree is essential for a clear understanding of the events of one section of the Royal Arch.

Select Master

In the Select Masters Degree, which is the second of the Council, the place of meeting represents a crypt beneath the temple. The historical object of this degree is to portray  the deposits of an important secret, which is said to have been made by our three Grand Masters.

Super Excellent Master

This degree was not originally part of the Cryptic Body, and is not available in all jurisdictions. It is said to be one of the best written rituals in Masonry. It deals with the incidents in the reign of King Nebuchadnezzar when Zedekiah, the last King of Judah, was conquered and carried captive to Babylon. It enlarges upon the section of the Royal Arch having to do with the capture of Jerusalem by the babylonian King, and teaches in most dramatic fashion the lesson of Fidelity.

The Cryptic Masons Medical Research Foundation

This organization of Cryptic Masons is the Philanthropy that researches and seeks a cure for Arteriosclerosis which is a disease of the arteries known as hardening of the arteries which results in narrowing of the arteries. It is progressive and interferes with blood flow to the heart resulting in a Heart Attack When a major artery to the brain is involved, it creates a stroke. If it happens to a leg, gangrene occurs and the leg must be amputated

The disease is the leading cause of death in the Western World and close to two million people are affected by strokes each year, and one in ten loose their life. Some people thought that old age is the reason for arteriosclerosis, but there are some countries whose people are free of the disease. Actually, there are some young people that are affected by this disease.

High Blood Pressure and smoking are leading causes of arteriosclerosis. Being overweight by itself does not increase the risk of heart attack but the companions of obesity, namely high blood pressure and diabetes put overweight people at risk.

A research unit of the University of Indiana School of Medicine has been established  for the study of arteriosclerosis to better understand the root cause of this number one health killer. The money we donate to the U.I.School of Medicine will contribute to establishing the prevention and finding a cure for this disease.

Through your generosity toward the Cryptic Masons Medical Research Foundation, You can contribute substantially to the research and control of this disease.
