To All That Helped,

I can't begin to tell you how much we appreciate your help on putting the flags together last Sunday. I know it was hot, but I'm so glad that Jodi let us use the hall to put them together.
They have been distributed so that we can have flags at some neutral locations for any event that might come up. Right now Herb Anderson in Lincoln has 130, Terry Bruner has 60, and I have 10. Herb drove down to Topeka this week, and picked up another 200 flags(these are on plastic poles). Next time you see Herb give a special hand shake for this extra trip (ladies a kiss would do)(he's bashful). This was way beyond the call of duty.
These flags are very special to us, as Pam and I have put so much time into making this happen, and what makes them so special is that we all came together, and did this because we all believe that what we are doing is the best thing we can do for our country and our soldiers, and besides that we like having you all around to share our time. We think the world of all of you, and could'nt ask for better friends.

Thanks Again, hope to see you all soon.

YORKFEST PARADE AND CELEBRATION

Ride Captain Norman Greene from York asked me to post this to all Nebraska members. I think it should be a very good event to attend. The mother of LCPL Brent Zoucha  wants to ride with Norman since he led her son’s funeral. This is her way of honoring her son. It is going to be a very Patriotic festival, and I would recommend that anyone that can go, please attend.

Watch for follow up details on the website under Nebraska forums.

Thanks,

Cliff Leach

THIS FROM NORMAN GREEN, JR. CENTRAL NEBRASKA  RIDE CAPTAIN ON AUGUST 3RD, 2006

The reason for this email is to notify all the fellow PGR riders of an up coming ride. The ride will be in York Nebraska for the Yorkfest parade on September 9th. . This is a yearly event in York that draws in thousands of people. The theme for this years event is “A Family Tradition Celebrating the Red, White, and Blue”. This should be great for the PGR as far as help getting more members in this area and getting the word out about us. The parade starts at 10 am. As of right now I am still working on a meeting place and time, But have a feeling that we will try and meet somewhere easy to get to around 9 am. From there we can ride into town where they will be staging for the parade. I have been in contact with one of the head people of the parade and they are really looking forward to us being there. I am hoping to get a great turn out for this and have all bikes with the big flags on them to show our spirit. Please mark your calendars and make plans for coming to this.

If you are coming in on Friday I would recommend trying to get a room reserved as soon as possible as rooms get few and far between on this weekend in York. A couple of side notes here. I will be away from home from Aug. 3rd till Aug. 15th If you need more information please hold your emails till after that. I will answer all the emails after the 15th.

I will be giving updates on times and meeting places on the board when I get home and get things finalized. If you are planning on attending this event please let me know so I can get the parade committe an idea of how many bikes we will have for this.

Another side note. Rita Zoucha has been asked to ride with us for this parade. Rita is the mother of LCPL Brent Zoucha who lost his life fighting for our country in Iraq. She said she wants to ride with us in the parade to honor her son.

Thanks

Subject: BULK E-MAIL TO BE SENT TO NEBRASKA MEMBERS: SPC JOSHUA FORD, PENDER NE.

Roadside bomb kills National Guardsman from Pender
LINCOLN  (AP) - A Nebraska Army National Guardsman has been killed in Iraq, the state National Guard commander said Tuesday.

A news release from Maj. Gen. Roger Lempke said Spc. Joshua Ford, 20, of Pender died Monday near An Numaniyah in south-central Iraq.

Ford was killed by a roadside bomb that also wounded another Nebraska Guardsman, whose name was not released. That soldier has been sent for treatment in Germany, Lempke said.

Ford was a member of the Wayne-based Detachment 1, 189th Transportation Company. He joined the guard while still attending Pender High School and learned to drive heavy trucks. He was activated for Iraq duty in October.

"Our deepest condolences go out to the family of Specialist Ford," Lempke said.
"Joshua was well-thought-of by his unit, and his loss today is being felt
throughout the state." Ford was survived by his fiancee, Michelle Frohlich of Pender; his father, Lonnie W. Ford; three sisters, Erin, Jessica and Shawn; grandmother, Ella Petersen of North Bend; and a nephew, William Dyer, Lempke said.

Hey Members,

I hope this email finds you all well.  I wanted to take a moment to thank you for all of the support that you have provided the greatest heroes in the world, The American Soldier.  I have been amazed to watch the outpouring of love and respect from each and every one of you in a time where the loved ones need it most.  I wanted to point out a couple of new additions to the website and make you aware of a couple of ways that you can further help the PGR complete its mission of supporting our troops and their families.

The first opportunity that we have is our events to be held in Sturgis this year.  We have been blessed to be asked by the Buffalo Chip and the Healing Field foundation, to properly salute our veterans and active duty military families. Our main event will be the healing field that we will have on the buffalo chip property.  This will be a sea of flags that will represent every service member who has given their life in the pursuit of the global war on terrorism. It will cost us about $45,000 to procure the flags and get them all mounted in Sturgis.  We are asking individual members and supporters of the Patriot Guard Riders, if they are so moved to do so, to sponsor a flag on the field.  Any fund received will pay for the flags, and will give a small amount to the Patriot Guard Riders Fallen Warrior Scholarship Fund. To date we have about ½ of the flags sponsored but still need to sponsor another 1200 to break even on the healing field.  The donation to sponsor a flag is $25.  The sponsoring member's name will be associated with that sponsored flag.  For more information about any of our Sturgis events please visit the following link.

http://patriotguard.org/Events/Sturgis2006/tabid/479/Default.aspx

Additionally our brothers and sisters at the American Legion are working on a new way to help fund there American Legacy Scholarship.  The legion has always been so supportive to our mission it is time to repay the favor.  More information about the American Legion – Pony Express can be found by clicking here.

http://patriotguard.org/Events/PonyExpressAmericanLegionLegacyScholarship/tabid/480/Default.aspx

In closing I just wanted to take a minute to let all of you know how humbling an experience the last 9 months have been.  When we put up the website Jeff and I remarked that wouldn’t it be great if at the end of year one we could have 5000 riders we would be able to cover every funeral across the country for active duty KIA’s.  Well shame on us for underestimating the level of patriotism left in America.  I want you to know that you can reach me at any of the contact points listed below and my door is always open to hear suggestions on how we can do things better or what are some areas that we should really focus on with more fervor.

Viet Nam Memorial Wall

is coming to Hebron Nebraska

August 23, 2006

The traveling Wall is coming to Nebraska on August 23 (WED), from Kansas. It will be displayed in Hebron Ne. the 24th through the 28th of August. There will be a Viet Nam Museum display, reading of the names (395) and all kinds of activities planned for this 5 day event. They are working on getting a " Huey " to fly in on Saturday from Grand Island

We as PGR members have been asked to " Escort " the wall up from Kansas on the 23rd. We will meet it close to the border and follow an escort of police, and fire vehicles all the way to Hebron, where it will be set up and displayed the next day. The details of times and place are still be arranged, but I want to give you all a heads up that this is a very important invitation that has been extended to us, and I would like to have as much participation by all as I can muster up. This is a truly a Great Honor, as this memorial doesn't make it here that often.

Mark this down on your calendar, so that we can attend. There are motels available for those who want to stay, along with campsites. I would like to offer these folks a "standing watch" for the wall, so those of you who might be interested in staying all night to guard it let me know.

AIRMAN JASON J DOYLE

U.S. NAVY

OMAHA NEBRASKA

There will be a Memorial service for Airman Jason J. Doyle of Omaha Nebraska, on July 15th, 2006 at the Capehart Chapel in Bellevue Ne at 10:00 .

The family has requested that as many as possible attend, as the parents are riders too, so this is important to them. PLEASE BRING ALL YOUR FLAGS. WE HAVE SOME SMALL ONES LEFT OVER, BUT ONLY ABOUT 30.

 MISSION ITINERARY:

Assembly time will be at 0800,at the Kwik Shop on Capehart Road in Bellevue,  with riders meeting at 0830, and clutches out at 0845, to arrive at the church by 0850, family will arrive at 9:15. Driving Instructions from Omaha—Take hwy 75 South to Capehart Road, go West ½ block Kwik Shop is on the left. From the South, come up 75 South to Capehart Road and turn West. Any other directions, please don’t hesitate to write me.

For this mission, we most likely will not have Bellevue Police to Road Guard. There is only one main intersection, which we can handle with our own.

I know that this is again short notice, but the family did not return my calls until 10:00 this morning.

I have a special interest in this service, as I am a Navy vet, with Aircraft Carrier time on board. I know that this is a dangerous job, and unfortunately things do happen. He is a young man who has given his life to protect us all, so please attend this if you can. I know that we are all stretched to our limits, as we have been hit hard with deaths here in Nebraska, but this is what makes our mission so special.

Thank you once again, and I hope to see all of you there.

Memorial Service for Airman Apprentice Jason J. Doyle

15 July 2006

Airman Apprentice Jason Doyle was born on February 21, 1987 and grew up near Sunset, Utah and moved to Bellevue, Nebraska in 2000 to live with his parents. After graduating from Papillion LaVista South High School, AA Doyle joined the Navy in June 2005. He attended Basic Training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Illinois. Following Recruit Training, His initial assignment was to VAQ 136, A Tactical Electronic Warfare Squadron homeported in Japan. VAQ 136 was deployed on board USS Kitty Hawk (CV 63) while conducting naval operations in the Sea of Japan.

Airman Apprentice Doyle will be remembered by family and friends for proudly serving his country. His passion for life and his sense of humor brought laughter and smiles to everyone who knew him.

As most of our riders are not able to gain admittance to the chapel and the service because of the size of the chapel, this is a short list of the service : Organ Prelude by Mamie Bryan, Musical Reflection - Navy Hymn "Eternal Father, Strong to Save", Welcome and Invocation, Obituary by Chaplain Captain Randall Jamieson, Responsive Reading by Deacon Thomas Frankenfield and Scripture Reading by Chaplain Jamieson, Psalm 46 Romans 8, Memorial Reflections by Family and Friends, Musical Reflection "On Eagles Wings", Message by Chaplain Donovan Gaffney, Closing Hymn "God be with you till We Meet Again", Benediction by Chaplain Gaffney, Firing Party and Taps, Presentation of the American Flag, and Postlude.

FATHER MOURNS LOSS OF SON

From KMTV Channel 3 NEWS.

Bellevue, NE-The father of a Bellevue sailor who is lost at sea, is preparing to say goodbye to his son. Last weekend, 19-year old Jason Doyle fell from an aircraft carrier off the coast of Japan. The Navy searched 3,000 nautical miles for Doyle, then gave up the search after a few days. Jason's father tells Action 3 News, his son wanted to see the world, and joined the Navy at the age of 17. Dale Doyle says Jason was on his first deployment with the USS Kitty Hawk when he fell from the carrier. He says he knows he's lost his son, but Jason is in a better place. Doyle's ship mates will remember him during a ceremony on the USS Kitty Hawk later today. His family in Nebraska will remember him during a memorial service at the Capehart Chapel in Bellevue.

Omaha, Nebraska

Missing at Sea

Airman Jason Doyle (19) of Omaha Nebraska, was officially listed as “Missing at Sea” on Wednesday July 12, 2006. He fell off the USS Kitty Hawk while performing air ops duties in the Sea of Japan.

Contact has not been made with the family as of yet, they have a family spokesperson, who I am unable to get in touch. My number has been passed to the family, but no return as of today.

The family is going to have a Memorial Service on Saturday July 15th, at 10:00 in the morning at the Capehart Chapel in Bellevue Nebraska. We have not been invited as of yet, so I am not posting this as a “Confirmed Mission” until I hear from them.

This is all the information that I have at the present time.

From Bob Swanson on Friday, July 7th,  2006

All:  This is the schedule for Lincoln area riders.  Tom Kennedy sent this to me and asked that I forward it to all of you who might be coming from "that area".  You people are a very important part of the ALR and your support and attendance at events is appreciated.  Keep in mind what we are doing tomorrow, and I am sure that each of you will agree that this is important.

The reason I try to send out PGR info is that not all ALR members have signed on to the PGR!! $#@^%&$
I think Cliff said our latest Nebraska count of PGR members is over 500!  It doesn't cost anything Smiley emoticon, and NO MEETINGS.  Just as well sign on, that way you will be sure to get the latest info on schedules.  (won't have to wait for me)  Last night at the airport to welcome home Cpl. Jeremy Jones, we had a GREAT turnout.  About 100 bikes waited until the plane arrived about a 1/2 hour late, escorted him to the funeral home and completed the mission by 2330 (11:30 PM)  Everyone tired, but no one complained.   The Omaha Police Dept. again did an excellent job of keeping our escort moving through traffic.  As you might guess, keeping 100 bikers together is sometimes like herding cats, but they are super.  Anytime you see an officer, let them know how much you appreciate their service.

Take care, hope to see you Sat.  bob swanson

Cpl. Jeremy Jones Welcome Home, Friday July 7th, 2006

As there was little room at the Airport Arrival and Departure, we all gathered in a parking lot on the way to downtown waiting for the plane bringing Jeremy Jones home.

Many of us spent the time in different ways. It was two hours later waiting for the hearse and the immediate escort to drive by.

When the hearse did come by, we all filed in behind the escort and proceeded to the funeral home on West Center. We would like to make it known to everyone that we appreciated the help that the Omaha Police Department Motor Corp gave us to help clear traffic and keep our escort together.

STAGING FOR THE FUNERAL: JULY 8TH 2006 (0745)

Saturday Morning: 0745. We will stage at the ALLIED OIL PARKING LOT ON 24TH AND MARTHA. (JUST TO THE NORTH OF THE INTERSECTION)

Directions from the North: Take I-29 South (or hwy 75 South) to I-480 West, to I-480 (hwy 75 south) South, then get off on Martha St. Go East to 24th St, then go left (north) ½ block to parking lot on left (This area is under construction, not sure what is open!)

Directions from the South: Take I-29 North to I-80 West, I-480 North (hwy 75 north), get off on Martha St. go East to 24th St, then left (north) and ½ block to parking lot on the left.

Directions from the West: Take I-80 East to I-480 North (hwy 75 north), (downtown) and get off at Martha St, then to 24th St, go left (north), ½ block to parking lot on left.

Directions from the East: Take I-80 West to I-480 North (hwy 75North) get off on Martha St, go to 24th St, then left (north) ½ block to parking lot on left.

Now if you are confused, bring up a map on Mapquest, and it’s pretty easy to follow.

Riders meeting at 0815, and clutches out at 0830 sharp—Mortuary will bring in Jeremy Jones at approx 8:45 to 9:00. We will go straight across 24th St south, to Farnam St, go left 2 blocks, and park in parking lot across from the church. (This should make it easier to form up after the service). We will need approx 4-6 Road guards. Any Volunteers let me know at staging area. Only one tricky intersection to deal with.

BRING ALL THE FLAGS YOU CAN, OURS DID NOT COME IN FROM OKLAHOMA). I don’t know if the Topeka guys will be there or not with theirs.

Several (cage) riders and Conagra foods will provide water and etc for us.

PLEASE TAKE NOTE: The Jones family has opened their arms to us to honor their lost one. He is an Omaha boy, a decorated hero, and a fellow brother to all of us. Let’s do our best to show them we are there “To Do The Right Thing”. I request that as many PGR members attend if you can.

ESCORT TO FINAL RESTING PLACE (FOREST LAWN CEMETARY)

OPD motorcycle patrol, followed by five lead PGR bikes, with missing man formation,

Hearse, Family, PGR bike procession, and then visitors. When we arrive at the cemetery, everyone dismount, and come to the hearse so that honors can be done when he comes out. Presentation of PGR plaque will be done after family is presented Flags, by S.C.

MISSION  POLITICS:

As usual, the undesirables will most likely be there, so remember once again what our mission is, and they too will come to pass or “vanish”. There will most likely be strong media coverage, so please if they confront you, either send them to me, or be discreet in your comments to them.

Subject: BULK E-MAILTO ALL NEBRASKA MEMBERS

Patriot Guard Riders of

NEBRASKA

First of all, I would like to introduce myself to all of you. My name is Cliff Leach, I live in Elkhorn Ne, have lived here for over 30 years, and have been married to the same woman (Pam) for a little over 40 years. I have two children, a son Sean Leach who lives in Omaha with his wife and 3 children, and a daughter Michelle Leach who lives in Oklahoma (she still loves Nebraska). I am a Crew Leader for the Nebraska Dept of Roads in Elkhorn Ne. I have been actively involved in the American Legion Riders since it’s inception about a year and a half ago here in Omaha. Pam and I love to ride (empty nest syndrome),and try to involve ourselves with motorcycle activities and people as much as possible.

I took on the position of State Captain for the PGR Memorial Day week-end, and much to my surprise, everything went crazy from there. We had funerals with full escorts to and from airports to mortuaries to churches, to graveside. I have to say, that working with PGR people is probably the greatest thing we have done with our lives. I have seen so much generosity from people that it’s unbelievable. People have come from all over the Midwest to attend the funerals of Hero’s they don’t even know. The time they have spent standing in the HOT sun to honor these folks, holding flags, traveling miles in sometimes adverse weather conditions, and dealing with sometimes confusing details, as most of our missions have come as “Late Notice Missions”. I consider my position to be  one of great honor, so that I can continue in doing the right thing for our troops and the families that are still here. I, being a Viet Nam vet know that I don’t want any of these people to experience what we came back to---I’ll let you fill in the blank_________!!

I have signed on some new Ride Captain’s, Jim Turner of Lincoln, Darryl Price of Bellevue, Norman Green of York, and finally got Bob Selzer on in Lincoln. I am privileged to have these new folks along with all the others I have in Omaha and surrounding areas. As Ride Captains, they are responsible for setting up routes, escort details, formations we ride in and etc. They have all been wonderful at doing just that.

I am looking for some people who live out west that might be able to help in setting up  rides etc, when it calls for it. The previous Captain told me about someone by North Platte, Kearney, Grand Island, that was interested, but he couldn’t remember who it was. If you’re out there, please write me and let me know ok.

As of today ( 6-24-06 )we are at 475 members in Nebraska. The number keeps growing daily, and just goes to show me that Patriotism is still alive in Nebraska. We have a great bunch of people here, and from Iowa that really “gel” together when it comes to working together.

Well enough about me, but I just wanted to formally introduce myself and my wife, so you know a little about us, and where we want the PGR to go here in Nebraska.

Welcome to all of you that have just joined, glad to have you with us, in our continuing efforts to “Do the Right Thing” in welcoming back our servicemen, and women. This is just so important to not only support our troops, but to honor them and their families in time of need.

I am attaching a “WHYWE RIDE” letter that was given to the PGR from a Mrs. Dinsmore, which pretty much sums up why we do what we do. It is a very powerful letter I think

Thank you all again for your support, and hope to meet with all you sometime in the near future.

Why Do We Ride?

PGR Member Laurel B. Dinsmore May 8, 2006

Why do we do this, you ask?

Why bother to stand out in wind and rain for someone unknown?

Why do we ride through torrents chilled to the bone?

The answer is simple: “Because, Never Again!”

Never again will they return home in shame,

Never again will wearing their uniform cause them pain.

Never again will we forget why they serve.

No, Never Again.

But still I hear you say “Why does it matter to you?”

They aren’t your friends,

your brothers, your sisters,

your father, your mother.”

War is a sad time for many; it is sad but true.

So, why do you gather in the gap between their families and their foes?

The answer is simple: “Because, Never Again!”

Never again will grieving parents, families and friends alone bear mourning’s toil.

Never again will hard-won freedom of speech be used to debase and destroy.

Never again will their sacrifice be dishonored upon their home soil.

No, Never Again.

Why do we gather, why do we ride?

Why travel this country far and wide?

We remember our grandfathers, fathers, brothers and others yet to come.

We stand proud through tears reflecting their courage and pride.

Because, Never Again.

That’s why we ride.

 Folks;
Sadly, the PGR has three missions to schedule this week.  Information is slow in arriving.  Norman Green in York will be handling the ride in Clark, NE.  We have two more with sketchy details; one in Bellvue Thursday, another we have a name only at this point.  Please bear with us and stand ready.  More details to come.

Memorial of a fallen soldier

Army Reserve Specialist

Benjamin "Ben" James Slaven

Even though this was a work day for many, app. 100 riders from many eastern counties of Nebraska were there to honor this fine young man. Close to the same time, other riders were gathered for a second memorial at Clarks, Nebraska.

Right - Gage County Sheriff's Department showing support for one of their fallen sons.

We all gathered at Saint John Lutheran Church in Beatrice, Nebraska at 3:00 p.m. on June 20th, 2006, for the purpose of honoring Ben James Slaven, who was fallen by an IED in Iraq on June 9th, 2006.

Riders lined up along the sidewalk leading to the doors of the church, each holding the flag of our country to honor the caisson as it passed by to be placed in the foyer of the church. The church was filled to overflowing with family, friends, and servicemen and women. The bier was moved into the sanctuary as many arrangements graced the alter. Officiating the service was Pastor David P. Kramer and Pastor Joann K. Kramer of St. John Lutheran Church.

Ben was born at Fort Lewis Washington on March 20th, 1984. Ben moved to Utah and then to Beatrice. He attended Beatrice Junior High and graduated Tri County High School in Dewitt when he moved to Plymouth, Nebraska. After his education, he gained employment at the Beatrice Development Center as throughout his short life of 22 years, he enjoyed helping others. He was known for his honesty and did not drink or smoke. As his fellow students and friends recall, he enjoyed working on his Dodge Pickup. He loved to make people laugh and some say with his antics he could have been a stunt man. He was a good man, deeply loved by friends and family. He earned the respect of all who knew him.  He had a strong sense of Patriotism and service to his country as he enlisted in the Army and served in the 308 Transportation Company who was deployed in Iraq only last year. While in Iraq he got turned on to faith. He always wanted to get married. He trusted in God. A roll call was given in his honor by the Transportation Company. His name was called three times then silence. On his company's return from Iraq, a seat on the plane was reserved for Ben in his honor. Ben was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for Bravery by a grateful nation.

During the service, as Ben loved country music, two musical selections were played. They were "The Baby" and a very beautiful "Find Your Wings". A bible reading, John, Chapter 14, verse 1-6, was given by Pastor David Kramer and the Eulogy was given by Pastor Joann Kramer. Congregational Hymns sung were "Nearer My God To Thee", "In The Garden" and "Amazing Grace". A vocal selection of "The Lord's Prayer" was sung by Jill Jurgens.

Right - The casket borne by the Pallbearers accompanied by the family to the hearse.

Left - At the entrance to the cemetery, flags were displayed by riders and friends.

Right - Mourners gather at the gravesite.

After the service, A very moving procession was conducted through Beatrice. The Hearse of the Funeral Directors of Harman Wright Mortuary and the Family was followed by the escort of some 100 motorcycles of the Patriot Guard and the American Legion Riders and they followed by the cars of many friends to the Evergreen Home Cemetery of Beatrice. Many Patriots and friends displayed flags and salutes as the procession proceeded along the way. When all were in place around the burial site, The casket was borne to the grave by the Nebraska Army National Guard Honors Section. After a short committal by the Pastors of the church, "Taps" were played and the ensign was removed from the casket by the thirteen folds of the flag by the Honors Section. The flag was then presented to Major General Rita Broadway, Commanding General of the 89th Regional Readiness Command, who presented the flag to the family.

THE FAMILY AND MANY FRIENDS WILL MISS THIS FINE YOUNG MAN.

Dusty Reed Goodro

CUSTER - Dusty Reed Goodro, age 24, a native Custer citizen, died May 31, 2006 in Roy, Washington. Dusty Reed Goodro was born Nov. 11, 1981, in Custer, S.D. He graduated in 2000 from Custer High School. He worked and enjoyed a few months in Boulder, Mont., before his enlistment in the Army in March of 2001. Dusty graduated from the U.S. Army Infantry Training Brigade on June 22, 2001. He finished his Airborne course on Aug. 10, 2001. He then continued his extensive training in the 75th Ranger Regimental Training Detachment on Oct. 26, 2001. His final completion of training and becoming a Ranger was on Dec. 20, 2002. His life as a Ranger for the next year had just begun the numerous adventures that took him overseas four times to the front line in Afghanistan and Iraq. On Sept. 11, 2003, Dusty was in a horrible accident while performing parachute exercises in preparation to return once again to Iraq. No one knew that recovering from the head injuries Dusty sustained from the a ccident would be the greatest battle of his life. His family knew that the strength deep within Dusty would pull him through the tough days ahead of him. He proved them right. Dusty recovered and returned to join his unit, the 2nd Battalion 75th Ranger Regiment, in Iraq in February 2004 just five months after his accident. His adventures continued back and forth overseas until April 2005 when he was forced to return to the U.S. for more surgery. Dusty was discharged from the 2nd Battalion 75th Ranger Regiment on May 30, 2006, with an Honorable Discharge. He had received numerous awards for his military service. Dusty lived life on the edge and to its fullest. He was bigger than life. When he walked into a room, he took charge! He was very proud to be a Ranger and serve his country for all to enjoy the freedoms we have today. Tragically, Dusty's life was ended in an auto accident on May 31, 2006, in Roy, Wash., while he was getting ready to return home the next day to start ye t another new adventure. Survivors include his mother and father, Dave and Tori Mayer of Custer, SD; a brother, Travis Mayer; David Bland and family; grandparents, Cliff and Pat Goodro; Franklin and Florence Mayer all of Custer, SD; numerous aunts, uncles and cousins; his brothers of the 2nd Battalion 75th Ranger Regiment and will be missed by many, many friends. Visitation will be held from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday, June 7, at McColley's Chapel of the Hills in Custer. Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, June 8, at the Army National Guard Armory in Custer. Burial will follow at Custer Cemetery with the 75th Regimental Chaplain Major Paul Lasley officiating. Memorials may be sent to the First Western Bank of Custer. Arrangements have been placed in the care of McColley's Chapels of the Hills in Custer, SD.

There has been a death of a young man, SrA Dustin Grable from Offutt AFB, who is connected with StratCom in Bellevue Ne. The times and places are listed below.I know that this is short notice, but some wires got crossed, and I didn't find out about his death until tonight. Sorry for the HURRY UP!

Everyone please note:::::::: The family has expressed concerns over the UGLY people being there, but I haven't heard any rumblings, and nothing is posted, and I told them they don''t usually come on weekdays, but you never know about them. There will not be any police escorts or anything, so we must remember once again why we are there, and monitor our actions.

We need as many members as we can get, as the family is stressed out to the max, and really needs our support.

As the new State Captain for Nebraska, I'm shootin from the hip on this one due to the short notice. I was hoping to get things a little organized before my first mission as Captain, but don't look like that's going to happen, so I will appreciate any support you can give me on this one.

Thanks----------Any questions, please drop me a line, and I'll try and answer them.

Mission Time:
Assembly at 3:00pm Sunday, May 28
Rider's meeting: 3:30 pm
Clutches out at 3:40pm
Service will be held at 4:00pm at the Capehart Chapel.

Assembly:
Riders will meet at the Kwik-Shop on Capehart Road in Bellevue (South Omaha.)
Driving directions: From Omaha, take Highway 75 South past the Bellevue 370 exit, then exit on Capehart Road.  Turn right (east, away from Offut's South Gate)  The Kwip-Shop is on the left on Capehart Road, still within sight of 75, about a half-mile.  Rider's Meeting will start at 3:30 exactly; all riders must attend.

Mission Ride:
Formation will depart the Kwik-Shop at 3:40pm for the ride to Capehart Chapel.  For this mission, the riders will ride staggered except for a short section of four-lane.  Be prepared to run slowly and carefully; the entrance for parking is tight, and we will be in single file. Pending approval from the Chapel and depending on the number of attendees for the service, the PGR may be asked to park on grass, so bring your kickstand helpers (flat peice 'o wood...?) of you have them.  Parking will be determined shortly before the service.
The family may ask us to escort them after the service also.  If there are more than 450 people in attendance, the PGR Riders will stay outside to provide entry/exit honors and allow as many family and friends as can to get inside the Chapel.

Mission Family:
Calvin Allen's family has really had stress over the last week, but they are deeply appreciative of the PGR's effort to honor him.  Adding to their stress is the fact that Sallie Allen, his Mom, had not heard specifics from Army Casualty as of this morning, and she was still unable to set a firm schedule for the memorial service.  I have to convey my thanks to Senator Ben Nelson's office for straightening this out.  They responded to my call about her problem with a direct call to Senator Nelson's Washington office, and ten minutes after I hung up from that call, Sallie had her schedule details from Army Casualty.  Senator Nelson also assured that Nuru, Calvin's brother, would be flown to Arlington for the internment with the rest of the family, and made sure that Sgt. Allen's remains would be transported from Omaha to Arlington on time and at Government expense.  I can't thank Senator Nelson enough for helping the PGR help Calvin's family.

For the Army vets, Calvin was an 'Eleven-Bravo;' and a true soldier in every sense of the word.  Sallie made sure that Cliff Leach and I took a tour of his room, and I saw something I'll never forget.  Calvin had a large stuffed "Scooby-Doo" dog at the foot of his bed.  The "I'm afraid of Everything" dog wore a black knit cap that had crossed rifles on it, topped with the word "MADMAN."  The dog pretty much said it all - the sheer terror of war, along with a full determination to get the job done.  Sgt. Calvin Allen was one 11-B who got it done.  He was awarded TWELVE sports letters during his high school career, and carried the same drive and determination with him when he went into the Army's 10th Mountain Division.  He will be buried at Arlington National Cemetery on the Tuesday following his memorial service in Omaha.
His mother, Sallie, and his wife, Birgit (pronounced 'Brigit,' she's from Germany) both fought tears as the Army Casualty First Sgt. went over the arrangements with them.  They are doing their best to be strong, but it's hard.  Sallie will pick up Calvin's remains at Epply Airfield Friday Night.  We'll have a small contingent of PGR Riders escort the hearse from Epply to the Bellevue Memorial Funeral home at Sallie's request, and our Western Iowa PGR Riders are putting together another group to escort the hearse to the church on Sunday.

Mission Politics:
Yep, it's ugly, but it's always there. Offutt AFB Public Affairs will do their best to handle the press, but the press is already looking for something to bleed.  Calls from TV stations and other media in the area have asked about the "Counter-Protesters" who are going to attend - meaning the PGR.  Please be aware that reporters will try to corner PGR Riders and ask you "How do you feel" about people who desecrate soldier's funerals.  First order of business is to refer them to yer State Captain; if you're cornered and can't, the PGR answer is "What Protestors?  We're here to honor Sergeant Calvin Allen and his family for their sacrifice, that's all." This will guarantee that the reporter will leave disgusted, having failed one more time to generate the controversy he or she wants to cause so they can report on it.  Don't give them the chance  Everything we are, and everything we say on Sunday is for honoring a fallen hero and his family.  Period.  If you think your head will explode if you can't express your opinion of protesters, come to me or a fellow Rider; DO NOT APPROACH A REPORTER.  One of us will take you away from the church, wrap your head in a sack, and let you scream out of camera range.

This one, and the others going on now, really hurt.  It's Memorial Day Weekend, and I'm sure we'll all feel it deeply.  Honor is what Calvin deserves; honor is what we will give him and his family.
Ride Safe;

Upcoming Mission: Lonnie C. Allen

All;
This will be a tight schedule.  On either Saturday or Sunday, the PGR will ride to honor Sgt Lonnie C. Allen of the 10th Mountain Division, who was killed in Iraq by an IED along with two others in the same vehicle.  We're working with DOD and the family to get the schedule, but still awaiting word on the day, place and time.  Cliff Leach was able to talk to the family about what we do to honor the fallen, and the mission is a go; awaiting word.

 Thanks, Cliff!

More to come...

In Memory of  Sgt. Lonnie Calvin Allen, Jr.

Sgt. Calvin Allen Jr. as he was called by his family, friends, and relatives was born on March 7th, 1980 and lost his life by an I.E.D. in Iraq on May 18th, 2006, while serving as a member of the 2nd Battalion, 22nd Infantry, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division stationed at Fort Drum, New York. He deployed to Bosnia and Kosovo and on his return to Germany, married Birgit Hoermann on Oct. 28th, 2004. She moved to Bellevue, Ne. when Calvin was deployed to Iraq.

Calvin spent much time in school, graduating from Bellevue East High in 1998. He loved art and especially liked to draw cartoons and loved electronics. Calvin was an individualist but loved people. He made friends easily and had the ability to establish long lasting relationships. He was a member of Mount Carmel Baptist Church of Bellevue, Nebraska serving in the Youth Choir, the Young Men's Group, and ushering.  He played sports in schools he attended and many of his classmates were there to eulogize him at the service. Calvin also was a Cub Scout and received the Arrow of Light award. He was a Boy Scout and received many badges and awards. He participated in community cleanups and food drives. He had a special place in his heart for Senior Citizens and gave them his attention and respect. He was also a role model for the D.A.R.E. program at Bellevue East. Calvin attended Northeastern Junior College in Sterling, Colorado where he studied Criminal Justice. He joined the Army in 2001 to finish his college career.

The service was conducted at Capehart Chapel at Offutt Air Force Base in Bellevue, Nebraska the Rev. Herman Brown of Mount Carmel Baptist Church, Officiating. Rev. Brown stated that this Old Baptist Minister was there to celebrate this Great going home of this courageous and generous  soldier. He said Calvin loved children and was honest and had integrity. He also reminded the congregation that the Lord may not come when you call him, but he is always there. He admonished the family that they should always keep his memory alive. The Reverend Brown, at the conclusion of the service, sang the well known hymn, "It Is Well With My Soul". Calvin is survived by his wife , parents, and older brother and many of his relatives and friends.

The Capehart Chapel was full to overflowing. Over 400 members of the American Legion Riders and the Patriot Guard stayed outside as there was no room in the Chapel. They were there to honor Calvin and his family. After the service, the A.L.R. and the Patriot Guard joined in the processional.

I was just inside the door taking notes wearing my motorcycle vest when a Sergeant in Uniform approached me and said he appreciated the thoughtfulness of all the motorcyclists who was there to honor our fallen hero, Calvin. That Sergeant made my day. All of the Riders should be very proud of that appreciation. It makes our efforts worthwhile.

Before closing it is only fitting to include a poem written by Lonnie Calvin Allen, Jr. from his Seventh Grade English Class and I quote:

God's Miracle

Birds love to sing.
Beautiful songs of grace,
to tell of the many things,
God has put in place.

Lovely small creatures,
Soar through the sky.
To show the precious features,
of the Man on High.
